About: Emotion Study is a film exploring possibility of creating new immersive pictorial spaces. It is the result of a multi disciplinary collaboration between Ina Conradi and Mark Chavez, MOE AcRF Tier 1, URECA, NTU and NRF/MDA Co-Space, and students at the School of Art Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The idea of fundamental study on perceptions of emotion provoking images originated within Co-Space research into cinematic storytelling with the real-time and rendered imagery. At the time Emotion Study Survey was to assist in planning visual and behavioral representation of animated form. Production of digitally generated stills, photographs and paintings depicting various emotional states proceeded.(http://www.visual-analysis.com/survey.html). Over 120 still images were created using animated hybrid painting methodologies. The study addressed the audience’s emotional perception towards abstract images in order to understand viewer's reaction and emotion when they are exposed to nonrepresentational images. From these still images experimental short sequences were developed and pieced together into a painted animated setting.

Rooted in the years I worked as a painter and a sculptor in studio and with tangible materials these animated experiments were driven by limitations of the two- dimensional painted canvas and inspired by visual effects tools used in movies. I felt disappointment when transferring digitally composited painting from 3D space onto flat digital print. Even on the translucent substrate light and color could not compensate for the fact that the imagery is static and flat once formatted as 2D print. Concluded was that complexity of digitally evolved and algorithmically painted canvas is at its strongest when staying within digital projected video media. With an introduction of Stereo 3D experimental animation I further introduce and explore possibility of virtually creating immersive polysensory hybrid painting or 3D stereo sculpted and animated paintings.

The animated  simulations resulted in many variation of the new painterly canvas while random  and unorthodox process of generating an moving image counterbalanced for act of painting.

Technology: The imagery, synthesized is derived from software tools Next Limit Real Flow , Autodesk Maya Software, a 3D animation packages used by the film industry for special effects; Adobe After Effects for compositing; and 3D Vision kit for stereo interactivity. Fluid dynamics Visual Effects were used in generating imagery simulating expressive paint tactics of flowing, dripping, and pouring. Responding to environmental variables such as flow, gravity, turbulence and wind, painted strokes result in unpredictable dynamics similar to expressive act of painting. Expressive results of techniques employed were layered into compositions manifesting energy of various emotion categories.

To achieve some of the effects which was required for the Emotion Study Project,  two software side by side were used. One is Real Flow 4.3.8 and the other is Maya 2009.Realflow is used for creating the meshes/the animation and Maya is mainly used to create the camera movements as well as for rendering. to finally get a particular effect.
Next Limit's Real Flow, a software primarily used for generating particles designed to simulate realistic liquid like effects. In Real Flow, particles are generated using emitters; fields are then created to influence, move and sculpt them, resulting in the creation of abstract shapes and form. Due to the erratic nature of these particles, trial and error is required to get the desired effect. A layer of polygonal mesh is generated over them to materialize its surface and shape, these are then exported out as *.bin files and imported into Autodesk Maya via a plug- in.

Digital Pre-Visualisation of the proposed installation

Emotion Study projected in a gallery setting as a large live painting in motion with added component of 3D stereo

Installation view: The installation is planned for an enclosed room that would feature large scale projection mapped to two gallery walls. Complexity, energy, and suspense of an expressive moving painting is used to visualize different emotive states and present as separate painting. Deliberately placed aperture with stereo embedded 120Hz 3D LCD Monitor screen (13"x 22") with the 3D high-tech wireless glasses and advanced software would transform parts of the movie into an interactive 3D stereo experience. By superimposing 2D animation sequences with 3D stereo interactivity composed would be evolving patterns from simple to very increasingly complexity.

Artists Bio

Ina Conradi (Serbia/Slovenia/USA/Singapore) Mixed Media artist
Ina holds BFA, from the University of Belgrade, MFA in Arts, from the University of California, Los Angeles. She continued her studies in Tokyo’s National University of Fine Arts & Music, and Kyoto Seika College as a Japan Foundation Fellow. Ina has been exhibiting in Europe, USA, Japan and Singapore and is a member of the Slovenian Fine Art Arts Association, Singapore-China Association for Advancement of Science and Technology, (SCAAST), and has been a Japan Foundation Fellow since 1991. She is currently Assistant Professor in the School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Drawing on her long carrier of a painter and sculptor she merges painting methodologies, avant-garde filmmaking and sound cultures, into meaningful, immersive 3D animated public installations. In an effort to define relationship between technology, materiality and aesthetics her recent research is crossing into experiential 3D stereo animated pictorials spaces, interactive painted surfaces, human computer interface based on electroencephalography (EEG) technology and new emotive based digital animation experiences.

Philip Tan (Singapore): Composer / Arranger / Keyboardist / Percussionist
Philip Tan, a critically-acclaimed musician/composer/performer/ educator/music-consultant, has been dedicated to his craft for the last 2 decades. Known as one of the best composers in Southeast Asia, Philip defies pigeon-holing (classical symphony, percussion, fusion, ethnic, electronic, jazz), creating works that are aesthetically-adventurous and entertaining. With a grant from the National Arts Council, he did his Master in Music at Kingston University, United Kingdom, and studied Western, Electronic and World Music composition under Dr Tim Ewers, Mike Searby, Ludger Brummer, Dan Herbert and Dr Peter Smith. His collaborations with film and art-installation are showcased internationally in film festivals and biennales. His works have been performed and presented with great credits in many parts of Europe, USA, and Asia. In 2003 and 2005, Philip received the Life!  Theatre’s Best Sound Award for his contribution to theatre music composition. He is currently the Composer-in-residence of the Singapore Wind Symphony Percussion Ensemble.
